IUDs and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): A Personal Experience

Question
I have had both the Paraguard and the Mirena IUD's for BC. About 6 mos after having the Paraguard inserted (after my 2nd child in 1998) I began having symptoms of PCOS, although at the time PCOS was not suspected. I just had it changed to the Mirena a little over a year ago because the symptoms had been getting progressively worse; however, they are still present. I just learned that one of the side effects that is advised with the Mirena is the possiblity of cysts and I was wondering if the Paraguard has ever been known to have the same effect? I am not the typical PCOS pt since I have had 2 children, my symptoms did not start until approx. 8.5 yrs ago and I have experienced weight loss rather than weight gain (except I still have trouble losing abdominal fat). I am now having problems with my BP, free testosterone and had slightly elevated insulin but that since corrected itself. A 24hr urine test was performed along with bloodwork to r/o Cushing's disease/Renal problems and came back negative, except for the free testosterone. Any suggestions?

Michelle:

I am sorry for the delaying in responding to your inquiry.

I would highly recommend that you see a reproductive endocrinologist who would be able to evaluate all of your symptoms and order the appropriate testing in order to give you an accurate diagnosis.
