PCOS Diagnosis: Tests & What to Ask Your Doctor
Questionme again,
I wanted to know if you could tell me what tests I need to tell my doctor to do on me in order to diagnose polycystic ovary syndrom.
I have had a thyroid test and it was normal.. however I have been reading that the thyroid test isn't a sure test result to discover if you have the syndrom or not...
AnswerA presumptive diagnosis of PCOS often can be made from the history and initial examination. A history of episodes of amenorrhea that become progresively longer and enlarged ovaries gives us a clue to the disease. Urinary 17-ketosteroids are minimally elavated, but estrogen and FSH are normal. LH levels are elevated and the LH surge is absent. Sonography may or may not show ovaries with multiple cysts and laparoscopy can confirm this. Now we also perform a glucose tolerance test because it is now known that carbohydrate imbalance plays an important role in PCOS.
