PCOS and Thigh Cysts: Are They Related?

Question
I have PCOS and atleast once a month I break out on my thighs with cysts. Is this related to my PCOS. Years ago I had adressed this with a doctor and she gave me an antibiotic but didn't really tell me if it was related. Is it?

Answer
Hi Janell!
Based on personal experience and treatment with my own physician my answer is YES, the cysts are probably PCOS related. Because women with PCOS usually have elevated androgen levels, production of DHT is increased and this in turn induces acne. Those cysts are actually a type of acne that occurs when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria are pushed far down into your pores causing hard bumps. I personally have had to have 3 of these cysts surgically drained. There are several medications on the market now that are supposed to help with PCOS acne and you may need to try a few different treatments before you find one that works. My suggestion would be to schedule an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist and discuss what treatment options might be right for you. Good Luck!
