Pregnancy Weight Gain & Diet: Addressing Concerns at 35 Weeks
QuestionI am now 35 weeks pregnant, and to be honest I have been eating terribly my entire pregnancy. I have been on and off of bedrest and depressed because of it. It's no excuse, but too late to change the past. I have been eating WAY too much fat, fried foods and sugar. My midwife told me that I am predisposing my baby to weight problems because of the way I've been eating. I passed the GTT but have gained about 35 pounds. Is all the fat and fried foods I ate going to give my baby serious weight problems like my midwife said?
AnswerIt is normal to gain around 30 lbs during the pregnancy. There is no way to know what causes a newborn to gain weight or to have weight problems during its life. I doubt that your eating habits during pregnancy will cause any problems for the baby. However, if you continue to eat poorly, the child will probably follow your lead and eat lots of junk food and carbohydrates and fats (if you make them available). No matter what you do for yourself, try to watch your child's intake. Don't feed the baby just because it cries. Don't give in to junk foods. Make sure that, at least the baby, eats well. Good Luck to you.
