Episiotomy & Third-Degree Tear Recovery: What to Expect & Relief
QuestionI had a 3rd degree rectum tear (I think that's what the Dr said) plus an episiotomy and an epidural and I'm still fairly sore 3 weeks later. What's the norm for recovery? Any suggestions for relief and a faster recovery besides sitz baths w/epsom salt and ibuprofen?
AnswerHello Becky- yes, it will take another 3-6 weeks before you feel a lot better. You could try using TUCKS- put them in the fridge and use them cold. Also- go to a health food store and get some tincture of calendula. Mix 10 drops in a squeeze bottle that holds about a cup of water. Spray this mixture onto your perineum after you pee every time and then place a fresh TUCKS onto a pad and onto your bottom. Tucks are little circles of material impregnated with witch hazel- very soothing. Be VERY sure that you do not allow yourself to become constipated- that will hurt a lot. Drink LOTS of water, eat lots of vegetables and add bran buds to your yogurt or cereal. All the best- Cheri.
