Understanding Irregular Gestational Sac & Low Heart Rate in Early Pregnancy

Question
Hello
i went in for a dating scan 2 weeks ago (6wks+1 day) and the the ultrasound tech told me that the baby had an irregular gestational sac and that the babies heart rate was a little slow, 96 bpm.

She said not to panic as everything was in the right spot and the baby was measuring well.  I have had no spotting or bleeding in this pregnancy and would like to know if you have had any experiences with these problems.   should I be woriied about miscarrige.

kindest regards
jodie

Answer
Hello Jodie- once again ultrasound has done nothing but worry a new Mother. I have almost NO faith in scans. They should ONLY be used in cases of vaginal bleeding or very serious medical concerns and certainly NOT for dating. They are quite unreliable for dating anyway. We were never meant to "peer" into the uterus at our growing infants you know. The "facts" that the tech. talked about could be perfectly normal for YOUR baby- they don't all read the text you know- they are individuals- each and every one of them. As long as you have no cramps and no bleeding, things are fine. I never use scans in my midwifery practice unless there is a clear, medical emergency. I urge you to refuse all further scans unless there IS an emergency. Do you know that medical drs have lost the ability to palpate a woman's growing belly and determine the position of the baby? They just rely on scans now. How sad. All the best- Cheri.
