Delayed Period & Potential Pregnancy: Symptoms, Cycle Irregularities & What To Do

Question
My name is Heather and I am 24.I have no children. The date of the first day of my last period was Saturday October 9th. My husband and I recently lost our insurance so I had to go off of the pill. I was on Orthi tricyclen until August 2004. I was on a 28 day cycle and was very regular. September I was off the pill and had a 28 day cycle still. October was 32 days. It is now November and I am on day 36 with still no period and no symptoms. I took 4 pregnancy tests. First Response early detection. I took it in the morning. All 4 were negative. Even the one I took this morning (day 36). We had intercourse 4 times last month, but my husband pulled out before ejaculation. I am aware of pre-ejaculate causing pregnancy at times. We aren't trying, but we aren't necessarily trying not to try either. My question is, could I be pregnant, even though the tests were negative? I read somewhere that even after you go off of the pill, it takes a couple of months for your cycle to regulate itself so I am thinking that this may be the reason. I am afraid that somehting is wrong with me! I hope that I am pregnant and that I am healthy. Thank you!

Answer
If you normally have a 28 day cycle (from the first day of your periiod until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs around cycle day #14. If you had intercourse 4 times last month at around cycle day #14, you, of course, could have conceived (even if he pulled out). However, by now, a pregnancy test would show a positive result. If there is any doubt, I would suggest taking a blood test for pregnancy (Beta HCG), which is a bit more accurate. If that, too, is negative, you are not pregnant. Sometimes, as you said, after stopping the pill, it can take awhile to return to regular cycles.
