QuestionI am on my third pregnancy and I had to go and take my glucose test. My doctor said that I had failed my first one and wants me to go and take a 3 hour one. I just wanted to know what the normal numbers were because he said that mine was 150 and I just wanted to know if that was very high or borderline. I am now snowed in and so I won't be able to take my test for a few days and I just wanted to know how careful I have to be. I have never had a problem before and this pregnancy has gone perfectly until this test. Thank you for your time.
AnswerHello Brandy- don't panic- even if you DID have gestational diabetes, the only treatment for the vast majority of women is diet modification. When you DO go for your test, be sure NOT to eat ANY sugar or refined carbs the day before or the morning of the test. In general, you must eat LOTS of protein, ONLY complex carbs, ONLY three pieces of fruit a day and LOTS of vegetables. So, you eat lots of meat, chicken, eggs, low fat cheese, yogurt-PLAIN, turkey, skim milk. By lots, I mean some serving of protein every two hours while you are awake- keep a bowl of almonds near by to snack on- also good protein. Complex carbs are brown rice, sprouted grain bread, cooked grains, squashes, green peas, corn. Eat NO pasta, white rice, bread of any kind made with flour(sprouted grain bread only). Eat NO sugar in ANY form- white, brown, honey etc. That means of course no candy, sweets, desserts etc. I would NOT suggest that you use artificial sweetners either, so NO soda of any kind and NO juices- eat only the whole fruit. I know this may sound drastic, but it really is the very best food plan for pregnancy and to avoid diabetes problems. Hope that helps- Cheri.
