First Trimester Pregnancy: Symptoms, Timeline & Concerns

Question
This question is about my 18 yo daughter.  This is her first pregnancy.  We are pretty certain of her dates and she is 14, almost 15 weeks now.  She started showing and wearing maternity clothes within the first month.  She is not overweight in th least and, in fact, has lost 5 lbs so far and has not gained any weight yet during this pregnancy.  She has had 2 early US that confirmed the dates.  She had an appt with her midwife this week and she said her fundal size was more like a 16 week pregnancy as it was over halfway to her belly button.  However, in the last 2 days, it has grown more and is now less than an inch below.  I know this would make her measure about 18 weeks.  The midwife didn't seem concerned on Tuesday but we are a little worried.  What can this mean? She is scheduled for her 18 week US at the beginning of February.

Answer
A sudden increase in fundal height may indicate multiple gestation or a large baby. Neither is a cause for immediate concern and you can certainly wait until the scheduled ultrasouond in February. It will show whether there is a twin gestation or whether the baby is adequate for dates. As long as there is a good heartbeat and no vaginal bleeding, there is no reason for concern.
