Uterine Rupture After C-Section: Symptoms, Causes & Recovery

Question
I am 34 years old, I have four children, and the first day of my last period was 12/16/2004. In May 2003, I gave birth to my last child via c-section. (My first child was natural birth, while the next three were c-section, although we attempted a v-back each time, unsuccessfully.) Because the epideral was unsuccessful, I had to "Go under". During the procedure, the doctor found that there was a tare on my uterus comparable to the incession that he made. He made the comment that she was looking/peaking through the tare. My questions are: is it possible to have a healthy pregnancy after such an ordeal? Are there risks due to the tare? If so, what are they? What is the possible out come?

Thank you for your time,
Shannon

Answer
If you had a "window" at the site of the former uterine incision, you should NEVER attempt a vaginal delivery again. The risk of uterine rupture at the site of a previous scar is 1% normally. If there is a window, this risk increases. If you have any other factors in the pregnancy (gestational diabetes, hypertension, CPD, contracted pelvis, etc) this risk increases even more. It is safer in future pregnancies to deliver by repeat cesarean.
