Basal Body Temperature & Progesterone: Understanding Fertility Signs

Question
Chantal age 30
       1 child age 3
       last menstrual period Jan 23

Hi DR Rappaport,
I have been charting my basal body temp and they are pretty low. This morinig it was 97.0 at 7:30 am. I have been using the Clearblue fertility monitor so I am fairly certain I ovulated. ( I also had mild cramps during the LH surge ). Does this mean my progesterone is to low to be able to sustain a pregnancy? I've already had 3 miscarriages due to low progesterone. My ob has put me on Clomid in December because my day 21 porgesterone was at a low level of 3. I'm not to sure if I need to go and see him again based on my basal boday temps or should I wait? ( We are military, therefore there is a lot of paperwork involved if I want to see him, visists are not always covered by  my insurance company. Sorry this is  such a long question. Thank you for your time.

Answer
If you had a progesterone of 3, it is, indeed, low and you should be taking supplemental progesterone (either in the form of suppositories every day, or pills twice a day). Clomid will not increase your progesterone levels but will merely increase your chances of ovulation by increasing the maturing of follicles in the ovary.  I would cointinue the Clomid as well as start progesterone supplementation. Ask your doctor. You do not have to see the doctor for this. Just call and speak to the doctor if you are permitted.
