Genital Pain & Irritation After Intercourse: Causes & When to See a Doctor

Question
35, 3 children, 02/19/05

After to much foreplay by husband I am now experiencing painful swelling, pain in the genital area (not just vagina opening)especially when urinating.  The whole area is painful, itchiing, and swollen. Is this just one of those things where I will just have to grin and bear it until it goes away on own or should I see a doctor?  Kinda embarrassing.

Answer
Usually, after vigorous sexual activity, you can develop cystitis in thea rea of the bladder and inflammation in the vaginal and clitoral areas. If you notice frequency of urination, burning on urination, or urgency, you should do a culture of your urine to rule out a urinary or bladder infection. Sometimes, "pelvic rest" will help or sitz baths. At times, a steroid cream will also help to alleviate the swelling and discomfort. If there is any doubt, have it checked out by your gynecologist.
