Home Birth in Mongolia: Essential Preparations & Considerations
QuestionI am 32, with 4 children. Last period Jan 8.
We live in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and I am going to have this baby at home for the first time. I haven't had any problems with this prgnancy, and have always had very fast deliveries. I just want to know what things I need to have on hand and any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Laura Crocker
AnswerIf at all possible, you should not deliver at home, but rather in a hospital where there is access to neonatal care. However, if there is absolutely no other choice, and you have a midwife or other help, make sure that you have enough blankets to keep the newborn warm. Cover the baby's head immediately after delivery and place it skin-skin on your belly (to maintain heat). Make sure that you have a way to clamp the umbilical cord and a way to suction the baby's mouth and throat to prevent aspiration or respiratory distress. Whoever is helping you deliver the baby should try to control the delivery to prevent any tears to your perineum. Delivery of the placenta should be done quickly but completely to prevent post partum hemorrhage. Once the placenta is delivered, your belly should be messaged until the uterus is firm and the bleeding has slowed down. Good luck.
