Merina IUD: A Hormone-Releasing Option for Family Planning

Question
I am a 29 year old woman who is happily married with two kids, ages 7 and 4 months. My husband and I do not want more kids at this time but are not ready for any thing as drastic as sterilization. I'm tired of pills as I have been on them (with the exception of two planned preganancies and breastfeeding) since I was 14. I started them that young due to heavy periods, severe cramps and migraine headaces that always seemed to come during my period. My OB/GYN, who is also a good friend, has suggested the Merina IUD. I like the idea of not having the day to day worry as well as the fact that I can have it removed easily should we want another baby. I have two questions: First, will the leval of hormones released help the symptoms mentioned above at bay and, second, are you aware of any reports of women having trouble having children after the IUD has been removed? Also, I can't seem to find any statistics on the failure rate, any info?

Answer
I,too, have trouble finding statistics surrounding the Merina IUD.  Some women like the systom very much. I can't tell if the IUD will help your symptoms to improve, and  after the IUD  is removed, there is sometimes a delay in returning to yur regular cycle. I will look in my office to see if I can find any statistics on Merena and get back to  you.
