Pregnancy After Endometrial Ablation: Risks & Chances | Gynecology Q&A

Question
I am a 39 year old with two children. I had an endometrial ablation in December to correct heavy menses. The surgery corrected the problem, but I bleed lightly for 1-2 days once every 21 days. An ultrasound was done that showed a thin endometrium. Can I still get pregnant and if so will the fetus be at great risk and/or are my periods too light indicating not enough endometrium? I also have adenomyosis(sp?). How does that figure into this? Thank you.

Answer
If the ablation was incomplete and you still have some healhy endometrium (even if it is thin), it can sustain implantation and you can carry a pregnancy to term. However, if there are some areas where the ablation was successful in destroying the endometrium, then there is a higher risk of miscarriage, if the embryo is unsuccessful in implanting into the endometrium. Ablation will not prevent conception, but can cause miscarriage when the embryo tries to implant into the uterus.
