Second Trimester Bleeding in Twin Pregnancy: Causes & What to Expect
QuestionI am currently 16 weeks pregnant with twins. At the beginning of the pregnancy (about 6-7 weeks)I had some bleeding which turned from bright red to brown in a few days and then stopped. Yesterday morning I had a small amount of thin red blood again - and this terrified me - I thought I had miscarried. I was rushed to the hospital where I was scanned, and the babies appeared fine with two regular heart beats. The bleeding stopped but this morning I had more brown blood again which has persisted all day. What could this be and what should I do about it? Could it be something serious?
AnswerYou may have a subchorionic bleed, which is a sequestration of some blood within the folds of the placenta. This usually dissipates on its own and does not interfere with the pregnancy. If the sonogram showed that all was normal and the babies are growing adequately and there are good fetal heart tones, you need not worry. If you start to bleed HEAVILY with cramps, then get another sonogram.
