Frank Breech Presentation: Risks & Hip/Leg Issues After Birth
QuestionI am 25 years old pregnant with first child. I am in my 37th week of pregnancy. Last menstrual was December 19th.
When you are pregnant with a baby in the frank breech position what are the chances of and different problems that could accur with the babies hips or legs after birth?
AnswerUsually, for your first child (and often with any pregnancy) no obstetrician will deliver a breech (frank, footling, or complete) vaginally. I deliver all breech presentations by cesarean section. By delivering via cesarean section, there is usually no problem with the heips or legs after birth. Often, if it is a complete breech (with the legs up near the face) it will take several days to weeks for the legs to extend. Frank breech babies (where the legs are flexed at the hip and the knee) return to normal quickly.
