Understanding Late Period & Negative Pregnancy Test: What to Do

Question
Thanks for your response. The sonogram was on October 5 and the only thing the Sonogram  tech person said  is that I had a little bit of fluid behind my uterus- Then my Doctor said that she didn;t think that I was pregnant and gave me the shot. I feel better  to know that if for any crazy reason I am  indeed pregnant the shot will not harm the baby. Ima still late and I ma just waiting for my period to start. The weird part is that I feel sick with nauseas and still have abdominal pain. What shoudl I do if nothing happen in the enxt to weeks. Can I go to the lab and ask for the test or do I need to do it by referal. Thanks again for your responses.

Hi. I am 30 years old. My last period was on August 25th .My period is unusually late. 9 days to be exact. Home pregancy test came negative. After an appt with my Doctor she gave me an ultrasound and said that I was not pregnant and gave me a progesterone shot. I am concerned after I read one of your responses that in a  5 week  ultrasound is hard to detect a pregnancy.Could I  be pregnant? would the shot affect the pregnancy if I am expecting?
Answer -
If your last period started on August 25, you would have ovulated on September 7 and could have conceived if you had sex on September 6,7,8, or 9. If you did become pregnant on one of those days, a pregnancy test would not show a positive result until 14-21 days later. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. You were due for your period on September 21. Therefore, you should have taken a pregnancy test after September 28. You did not mention when you took a sonogram, but if your last period started on August 25, a sonogram would not show a fetus or a fetal heartbeat until 6 weeks later (October 4). At five weeks gestatoin, a sonogram merely shows an empty gestational sac.  Of course, if the sonogram shows absolutely nothing in the uterus, you probably are not pregnant. Progesterone is used to induce your period. If you are pregnant, the progesterone will not induce your period. Progesterone will not cause any damage to the pregnancy if you are pregnant. We used to use progesterone in this manner as a pregnancy test before pregnancy tests were invented. If you have any doubts, take a blood test for pregnancy (Beta HCG).

Answer
If the sonogram at five weeks showed nothing but fluid behind the uterus, it sounds like you are not pregnant. If you wish, ask your doctor to repeat the sonogram in 2 weeks. if there is still nothing there, you will know for sure. By then, if you have a viable pregnancy, you will see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat.
