Understanding Gold Ring Markings: What If My Rings Have None?

Question
Hello,

I have two rings, one which was purchased in a store, and another my mother had made for me.  (She had a stone put in it).  Both of these bands have no markings in them.  I thought most bands were stamped 10k, 14k, or 18k.  (These bands are yellow gold).  These were purchased/made in the United States.

My question is:  Since these bands were not stamped (no markings anywhere in the bands), is there a chance they are "automatically" 10k gold?  (I don't like 10.  I prefer 14 or 18.  Just my personal preference).

Thank you for taking the time to read my question!

Answer
Hi Beth,
My opinion about gold is that if its not stamped it could be anything. I have even seen bands stamped 10K that were brass. Dont make any assumtions on gold. Get it tested. It's fast and easy.
PS If you notice my Knowledge rating is less than 10.0 . All the people writting in with a question that were dissapointed with my answer assumed I wasn't Knowledgeable on the subject. I am polite but I don't Sugar Coat my replies.
All my replies are based on experience. When you loose money like I have on buying stamped rings that say 10K or 14K that turn out to be brass. You learn real fast. Dont make the same mistake I did when I was starting out.
