Breech Baby: Version vs. C-Section - What Are My Chances?

Question
Hello Dr. Rappaport,

I am 37 years old, and am 37 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My baby recently turned and is now in the frank breech position. My doctor has presented me the options of attempting a version to turn the baby, or having a C-section. Apparently version is not always effective in turning the baby. Realistically, I know I'll probably require the C-section to deliver. My question is, statistically, is there much likelihood that my baby will turn again (on its own) to the vertex position before birth?

Many thanks for your help,
Jo Parker

Answer
At 37 weeks it is highly unlikely that the baby will revert back to the vertex presentation again. Furthermore, if you go into labor or rupture your membranes (break your water) you run the risk of a prolapsed cord and dire risks for you and the baby if it is still in the breech position. The safest and most recommended course at 37 weeks is to have a cesarean section to deliver the baby, as soon as possible. Good luck to you. I would not even try a version.
