Understanding Abdominal Muscle Spasms During Pregnancy & Postpartum
QuestionI am 13 weeks pregnant with my second child. 20 months ago, I had a C-section for my son. Shortly before I knew I was pregnant, I had severe muscle spasms in the middle of my abdomen while experiencing and orgasm. The spasms were so intense that I literally had to stretch my abdomen and hold it to make them stop. It went on for a full minute. The next day, my stomach felt like I had done a million crunches. I experienced the same thing yesterday and I am concerned. I had a Subchorionic hematoma early in pregnancy and am worried the spasms might have caused it to begin with. My question is, what could be causing the spasms? Could it be adhesions or a hernia? Secondly, could it have been a sign of my first SCH? Thank you kindly.
AnswerIt is most likely that the spasms are due to adhesions from your last cesarean section. If you had a subchorionic hematoma, you would start bleeding. The subchorionic hematoma usually dissipates on its own and does not cause any problems for the pregnancy or the fetus. I doubt it is a hernia unless you see a "pouching out" of the abdomen. Muscle spasm would not be caused by a subchorionic hematoma, which is usually silent. Try a heating pad or warm showers if you again get this sensation. Use tylenol to alleviate any discomfort. With time, the adhesions will soften.
