Thickened Endometrium & Negative Pregnancy Test: What Does It Mean?
QuestionHello...My name is Adriana and I am 22 years old. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the last year with no luck. My doctor has put me on metformin to help regulate my hormones. I've been on it for 5 weeks. My last mestrual period was sometime late Sept. I had very light spotting Oct. 20 - 22 and that's the last time I've had any bleeding. This weekend I had an ultrasound and was told that my endometrium was thickened. We also saw a small black circle in the center. Could this be a gestational sac? I took 2 hpt's after this but they were both negative. Is it possible to have seen a gestational sac and get a negative hpt because it's too early? I really hope I am pregnant...please let me know anything. By the way I called my doctor but he says to wait 2 weeks for a period...if there is nothing he will test me again. I have also had sore breasts, very light abdominal pressure, frequent urination, and nausea. Thanks for any help!

AnswerIt would be nice to know the exact day of your last period. HOwever, if you believe you started your last period at the end of September, you would have ovulated around the middle of October. If you did become pregnant in mid-October, a pregnancy test would show a positive result by the beginning of November. If you took two HPTs within the last week, and they both were negative, you are definitely not pregnant. A sonogram should show a thickened endometrium, which merely means that you are about to get your period (within a few weeks). A small black circle does not sound like a gestational sac. Try to keep a careful record of when you start your period. The metformin should help you ovulate. Concentrate sexual intercourse around cycle day #13,14, 15, or 16 each month. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. Good luck.
