Delayed Menstruation in Teenagers: Causes & What to Do

Question
My daughter is 16 and has not had her period for 4 months. She is not pregnant we did a pregnancy test twice and it was negative. I am starting to get concerned she has always been regular and has had her period since she was 12.

Answer
Well, the leading cause of amenorrhea (No periods) is pregnancy, in teens... that needs to be checked again, preferably with a first, early morning urine sample.  Then, if still negative, she needs to have further testing to see why.  I assume she isn't on birth control or depo shots.  Other causes are typically hormone imbalances.... if she is obese, then polycystic ovary disease is a possiblity.  Often, it turns out to be a thyroid problem, also.  These are all blood tests that can be done by your family doc.

Hope this helps...
