Gestational Diabetes: Understanding High Sugar Levels in Pregnancy & Treatment Options

Dear Doctor, I'm 6 weeks  pregnant. My age is 33yrs. My hieght is 5.4inch & I weigh at present 100kgs. My blood  sugar fasting is 135  &  fasting is 150. My gyenac has advised for insulin. Is it really necessary to take insulin? Are there not any medecine that I can take orally. Please advice.                           
*PS: This is my second pregnancy. I have  a 6yr old Son.

You said that your "blood sugar fasting is 135 and fasting is 150". Which is it? It is possible that you have gestational diabetes, since a fasting of greater than 100 is elevated. Usually, we perform a 3 hour glucose tolerance test to determine the diagnosis of gestational diabetes. If you do have a diagnosis of diabetes, we would first try diet control before starting insulin. I would suggest that you consult with an endocrinologist before you start insulin.
