QuestionHello,
I am 30 yrs old with no children. My first day of my last menstrual period was 30 Nov 2005. My question is, I am trying to get pregnant and was concerned with the RH factor. My type is O+ and his is AB-. Should I have any concerns with this?
Thank you,
Melissa
AnswerThe only concern would be if YOU were Rh negative and your husband was Rh positive. If a person had the Rh factor, that person is Rh positive. If a woman does not have the Rh factor and is Rh negative, and gets pregnant with a man who is Rh positive, the fetus can either have Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood. If the fetus is Rh positive, and the woman is Rh negative, her body "recognizes" the fetus as "foreign" and develops antibodies to destroy this foreign fetus. Nothing usually happens in the first pregnancy. However, once antibodies are produced by the woman, during the second pregnancy, these antibodies can cross the placenta and destroy the fetus or cause "erythroblastosis fetalis" or "blue baby syndrome". Therefore, if a woman is Rh negative, she is given Rh immune globulin (RhoGam) at 28 weeks and again at the delivery of the baby in order to prevent her body from developing antibodies to the Rh factor. However, since you are Rh positive, there is no problem. Now, if you are O positive and your husband is AB negaive, there should be no problem at all unless there is an AB/O incompatibility which is extremely rare. Don't worry. If you are trying to conceive and your last period started on November 30, you would have ovulated on December 13 and could have conceived if you had sex on December 12,13,14, or 15. If you did become pregnant, the best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. If you do not get your period by January 4, take a pregnancy test. If you get your period on time on December 28, concentrate intercourse starting on January 9,10,11, and 12. Good Luck.
