Hand Swelling During Pregnancy: Causes & When to Worry

Question
I have been having trouble with some swelling in my right hand. I am 29 weeks pregnant and this is my second pregnancy. I had a lot of swelling with my first but this one I have had no problems. I have been drinking more than enough water, swimming regularly. Could this be a real problem? I see my OB tomorrow and I plan on mentioning it but I don't know what a big deal is and what's not sometimes.

Answer
You may be retaining water in  one hand, causing swelling or numbness in the hand. Try reducing your salt intake as well as avoiding canned meats, deli meats, or prepared foods. Usually, we see swelling in both hands. There may be a blockage in the hand that is swelling, due to some constriction in your wrist. Discuss it with your obstetrician.
