QuestionI am 38 years old. I'm now over 8 months pregnant with my first baby (my last menstrual was on May 09, 2005). From ultrasound results the doctor informed me that my baby's kidneys were small (around 4 mm each, which should normally be around 7mm each). He told me not worry about it. He only wanted me to inform the pediatrician about it after the baby's born.
And there's other doctor informed me that small kidneys doesn't mean anything bad.
What I want to know is,
1. What's the average size of kidney ?
2. Is it true that I have nothing to worry about the fact that my baby's kidneys are small?
Thank you very much.
AnswerThe fetal kidneys usually vary in size. If your sonogram showed the kidneys to be slightly smaller than usual, I would hot worry about it. I would inform the pediatrician when the baby is born but I do not think you have anything to worry about. As long as the baby has been making amniotic fluid and the amniotic fluid index is greater than 8, the baby's kidneys are apparently working well.
