Understanding Enlarged Kidneys in Baby: Causes & What to Expect

Question
I am due may 24 the doctors keep telling me my baby has enlarge kidneys and now my amniotic fluid is high I had a amniocentesis and it turned out well so cause the enlarger kidneys

Answer
Dear Mary,

If you are asking what is causing the enlarged kidneys in your baby, I cannot answer that for you specifically. It is not terribly uncommon to see enlarged fetal kidneys via ultrasound and one way to determine whether there is a problem with the actual kidney function for the baby is by keeping close track of the amniotic fluid levels. A few potential causes of fetal kidney enlargement are some type of urinary obstruction, chromosomal problems, or cystic kidneys. Once your baby is born, the doctor will be able to investigate potential causes more closely and treat the baby accordingly. But if your amniocentesis came back ok, I would suspect you and your baby are doing fine at this point and your doctor will continue to keep a close eye on things until delivery.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question to some degree. I apologize for the delay in answering as I am experiencing ongoing computer issues. I wish you well.
