Acrylic Nail Exposure During Pregnancy: Risks & Concerns

Question
I had my acrylic nails filled at an Asian salon, without table ventilation, so I inhaled vapors, had acrylic applied to nails (after drilling I think too deep into nailbed), alchol applied to skin due to a little burning sensation, along with a little of "Stop-It" product to stop sensation.  Also, some acetone was used to remove color, then more color applied later.  This was one exposure at about 4 weeks and three days of pregnancy (2 weeks and 3 days after conception).  Will one exposure to all of these things hurt the fetus?  How severely...I keep thinking my baby will be severely mentally retarded or something.

Answer
Although you can never say that anything is certain, I would think that it is unlikely that any of the exposures that you had were significant enough to harm the baby.  I don't have any experience with the "Stop-It" product that you mention though.  Also, were the vapors that you inhaled acrylic vapors, or something else?

Regardless, I would mention this to your OB doctor who will likely refer you to a high-risk OB doctor where you'll have a comprehensive or "level 2" ultrasound at 16-20 weeks where he or she can look at the baby in detail.
