Allergy Shots & Pregnancy: Safety and Concerns

Question
I recently discontinued all my medications in order for me to become pregnant.  One of these medicines was my allergy medicine.  Within in one week off allergy medicine I came down with bronchitis.  My allergies are so severe that they will infections if not treated. There is no way I can live with out allergy medicine.  Am I going to have to give up hope of having a baby because of my allergies.  I had read that allergy shots are safe during pregnancy, does that include the first trimester as well? I can't hold off twelve weeks. I would like to be able to nurse my baby as well.  Is there any prescription allergy medicine that is safe during breast feeding.  What about allergy shots.  Can I continue to receive them during breast feeding?
Thanks if you can help.  I would love to conceive a child if I can control my severe allergies.

Answer
Most allergy medications (including shots) are safe during pregnancy. Depending on the specific agent in question, you will have to ask your obstetrician as to its safety during pregnancy. If you let me know the specific medication you are taking, I can let you know, as well. There is no reason to suffer with allergic symptoms during pregnancy.
