Toxoplasmosis IgG Positive, IgM Negative in Pregnancy: What Does It Mean?
QuestionHi, I am 27 years old and into my 14 weeks of pregnancy (first pregnancy). I have cats (now not in my new house, with my sister) and once in a while i visit them. I just did my blood test for toxoplasmosis and the result came back today and said that i am positive for toxoplasma IGG but negative for IGM. I am worried if my baby is infected with toxoplasmosis and will there be any damage caused to my baby. Is there any test i can do to check if my baby is okay? I read another article that u have answered regarding similar issue and would like to ask again personally. My doc said currently it shows 49 units of IGM. And 2 weeks later i need to do another test to check if it falls to 46.9 units (meaning safe). Can u explain more about this? thank you.
AnswerIf the IgM is negative,it rules out the possibility of acute or recent infection. A positive IgG merely indicates that you were exposed to toxoplasmosis in the past (probably because you had proximity to a cat). You are not infected at this time and do not have to worry. Toxoplasmosis affects outdoor cats when they eat infected dead meat. If you have an indoor cat, you can still play with the cat and live with the cat. Do not prepare foods for dinner with the czt on the counter. Have someone else clean the kitty litter box. Wash your hands after playing with the cat and prior to eating. Good Luck on your baby.
