Nutrition During Pregnancy with Gallstones: A Doctor's Perspective
QuestionI am looking for some nutritional guidance about what foods to eat, and what foods are most important for my baby. I am 14 weeks, and have a very large gall stone, for which I recently spent three nights in the hospital. The surgeon would like to remove my gall bladder during the second trimester, but my ob/gyn wants me to wait until the baby is born (I lost a pregnancy at 11 weeks in December, and he says the risks of surgery are too high to gain his recommendation) Since my release from the hospital, I have experimented with very small amounts of fat in my diet. What I have found is that I can safely eat 8-10 grams of fat per day, and no more that 3-5 grams in one meal. While I'm confident that my body is OK with this diet, I am concerned about my baby's development. My intake of protein has been limited because most of them contain more fat than I can digest without significant pain. I am allergic to seafood. What nutrients are most important for my baby? Are there foods that I can eat the provide the nutrients my baby needs, without putting myself at risk for emergency surgery? Thank you for anyhelp you may offer.
AnswerHi Bridget,
Wow, this is a tough one for me. I think this may be outside my expertise. You may want to contact a nutritionist. I have a book called "Nutrition and Pregnancy A Complete Guide from Preconception to Postdelivery" By Judith E. Brown, RD, MPH, PhD. It, or another book may be of more help to you.
I am sorry I couldn't help more. Best of luck to you and your baby.
