Sexual Activity During First Trimester: What You Need to Know

Question
i have been seeing a reproductive endocrinologist because i had 2 miscarriages within 6 months of each other and i am currently trying to get pregnant again.  She told me that when i find out i'm pregnant that we shouldn't have sex until i'm in the second trimester to give the baby a "relaxed" environment or something like that.  what i'm wondering is if the concern is with penetration or if it's with any sexual activity at all, so as long as we abstain from penetration, is oral sex or masturbation okay?  sorry if it's too much information i just want to be sure.  thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Kristin,

This is something you should clarify with your reproductive endocrinologist. When pelvic rest is prescribed later in pregnancies for high risk of premature labor/delivery, we want to avoid both penetration and orgasm since orgasm will cause spasms of the uterine muscle. But again, if you clarify with the doctor, since this is not a high-risk pelvic rest situation, you may not have to completely abstain.  :-)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
