Understanding Unusual Fetal Sounds During Pregnancy

Question
I am 37 weeks pregnant and when my baby is active I have been hearing an unusual clicking sound equivalent to an ankle or finger cracking or popping. Do you know what this is? Not hiccups.

Answer
Hi Roxy,

I have heard of this happening alot in pregnant women, infact, I have actually heard the clicking sound myself.

It is one of the mysteries of pregnancy. I remember speaking to doctors about it, as well as researching it some years ago, and I was not able to find a concrete answer on this. No one, seems to know.

Some do say, that its the round ligaments of the pregnant woman that are making the noises while they expand to accomodate growing baby. Round ligaments are in the lower abdoman, surrounding the uterus.

Some beleive, its the pelvis bones clicking as well, as they accomodate growing baby.

Others beleive, that this is the joints of the baby making the clicking noise, because when the clicking sound occurs, its often associated with alot of fetal movement.

Others beleive that its the baby sucking its thumb, hands or fingers. I personally dont beleive this theory, because there are no air pockets in the womb, and the baby is surrounded by fluid. So, it doesnt make sense.

I apologise, for not having a concrete answer on this, but no one seems to know ..

Its a mystery I tell ya ..lol
