Hearing a Fetal Heartbeat at 7 Weeks & Managing Morning Sickness

Question
I actually have 2 questions. My sister is pregnant and she heard the baby's heartbeat with the doppler thing they put on the belly, she is 7 weeks pregnant, is this possible to hear it that early? I didn't think it was possible. My other question was she is having really bad morning sickness and she seems to be getting sick all the time and can keep some food down but not all the time. What can she do to help keep her food down and not feel so quisy and getting sick.

Answer
Hi Kristy :)

In actual fact Kristy, the heartbeat can be seen and heard, from as early as 2 weeks pregnant...Its amazing, but its true :) The first thing that develops, immediately after conception, is the heart :)

As for morning sickness. Well there is the usual remedy that people use. Saltine crackers and water. Usually, the nausea subsides around the 3 or 4th month mark.

If the nausea is so bad, she cannot function or consume anything there are prescription medications her doctor can give her to ease the nausea, that is completely safe during pregnancy. Again, the doctor will only prescribe these medications if the nausea is debilitating.

Also, prenatel vitamins, can cause nausea, sometimes just changing the brand, makes the difference. If she wants to experiment with that, tell her to skip just 1 day, and see if she notices any improvement with her nausea ..If she does see a difference, have her talk to her doctor, about switching to another vitamin.

Tell her to stay away from spicy, high fat foods. (So hard to do when you have cravings). Eating light, lots of fruits and veggies, and lots of water. Diet, can often play a role in this as well.

Hope this is of some help, and if you have any more quesitons, please dont hesitate to write back.
