AnswerDear Jacqueline,
After having two previous miscarriages, I'm sure you know the symptoms of miscarriage. But to refresh your memory, and to make sure I'm being thorough, I'll go ahead and give you a brief list. The most common signs of a miscarriage are: Mild to severe back pain (often worse than normal menstrual cramps) or true contractions (very painful happening every 5-20 minutes), brown or bright red bleeding or spotting with or without cramps (but remember 20-30% of all pregnancies can experience some bleeding in early pregnancy, with about 50% of those resulting in normal pregnancies), tissue with clot like material passing from the vagina, nausea, and a decrease in signs of pregnancy or loss of breast tenderness. It is normal to have some discharge in pregnancy. I assume you have described it to your doctor and he remains unconcerned based on that description.
It is also important to remember that a woman who has had a previous miscarriage has only a slightly elevated risk than for someone who has not had a previous miscarriage.
It is very important that you maintain your nutrition, especially at this stage in your pregnancy. Please contact you doctor about this. It is important that he/she know that you are keeping "nothing" - not even water - down.
Most miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities. It may be due to poor egg quality or sperm quality or a fertilization or implantation issue. It's just nature's way of dealing with an unhealthy fetus - for whatever reason.
The only thing you can do now is to try to do what YOU can to maintain the pregnancy - try to eat healthy, drink healthy fluids (milk, juice, water), take those prenatal vitamins, get plenty of rest, limit lifting/straining, keep your abdomen safe, do not smoke or be around smoke, do not drink alcohol, check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications, limit or eliminate caffeine, avoid contact sports or activities that have risk of injury. And do let your doctor know about not eating or drinking fluids at all.
I wish you good luck and I hope I've helped relieve some of your fears.
Brenda
