Questioni went to the dr today and had a sono they told me my baby has a little extra fluid on her brain and want me to go in for a level 2 sono i want to know if this is a serious matter? will it go away? is my baby ok? how often is this seen? what causes it? please respond
AnswerHi Leslie :)
Your question is a little vague, because fluid on the brain comes in different degrees. But I will answer your question the best I can to cover all areas :)
Finding fluid on the brain of fetus's is not terrible common, but definately not unheard of. There have been many instances, where doctors have detected fluid on the brain, and the babies were born with absolutely no illness, or damage, and went on to be healthy vibrant children.
However, this can be an indication of more serious conditions as well. Conditions such as Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, as well as an indicator of chromosonal abnormalities.
So at this point, its very hard to determine what effects this possible could have on the baby. It might very well be nothing to be concerned about at this time, or it could be an indication of something a little more serious.
Kudos, to your doctors for following this up. A level 2 sonogram, combined with a possible amiocentesis, should be able to determine conclusively what effect, if any this will have on the baby.
Thankyou for writing, and if you have any more concerns, please dont hesitate, to write back ..
P.S ..My son also had fluid sacs on the brain as well. As a result, he was born with a sacral dimple very low on his back. A Sacral dimple is a hole or cavity that is open, and often goes to the neural tube of the spine. My son was diagnosed with spina bifida occulta, which is a very mild form of spina bifida. He has absolutely no ill affects to this condition. Infact, he is 16 months year old now, and runs around, with full use of his legs. He is mentally alert, and is completely a normal little boy.
I understand your worry, as I stood there once too. I went through all these tests with my son, aswell as after he was born I had to take him for MRI's and other image testing. Thankfully, he is absolutely normal. Just know ..I understand your feeling ..
All the Best to you :)
