Understanding Fetal Positioning at 37 Weeks: What You Need to Know

Question
Hi, I am 37 weeks and three days pregnant, due 12/28/06.  I am concerned about my baby's position.  I have two sons who both went into head-down position perfectly and I had uncomplicated births with both of them.  This, being my third child, is in an awkward position, to me.  The last time her position was checked was at 34 weeks, and I was told she is head down. but lying on her side. Her back is against my left-side, and her legs come across to my right.  I can feel her head moving on my pelvic bone but not directly on my cervix. Like she is diagonal or something.  Is this something I need to be concerned about?  Will she eventually turn completely head-down? Can this position hurt her?(because I am so uncomfortable)  I am very concerned and worried, since I didn't go thru this with my other two children.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Amie :)

This is not an uncommon issue, and there is absolutely no reason for concern. In almost all cases, if the baby is laying on its side, as it comes through the birthcanal, it turns itself for delivery. I know its very uncomfortable, my son also was in the same position. Your little girl, is very comfortable, and is in no discomfort. In the event that she decides to come down the canal on her side, your doctor will help her turn over as she comes down the canal.

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing!
