Post-Miscarriage Pregnancy: Understanding HCG Levels & Twin Risks

Question
Hello, I am a 27 year old female who miscarried last month on the 18 Jan 07. 11 Feb the doctor did a blood test and my HCG score was 1 the result was negative. Today Feb 15 a new blood test showed a positive pregnancy result. Does this mean I am pregnant again without having a regular cycle. And is it true that conceiving right after a  miscarrige increases the chances of twins. If I am pregnant is it to soon? Thank you

Answer
Dear Margarita,

If you had a negative blood pregnancy test since your miscarriage and now have a positive one, then yes, that indicates that you are pregnant again. You can ovulate, and thus conceive, without actually having a period.

As far as increasing your chances for twins, that is something that I can find absolutely no literature on. If you've heard that, I'd suspect it is a wives tale. I can't think of any scientific data that would support it unless you were using fertility drugs to try to conceive or had twins on either side of your families.

The general recommendation is waiting through three regular cycles before conceiving again, but there are some doctors who will just prefer at least one. Regardless - these things do happen and it doesn't mean anything detrimental. Many women have conceived again right away and have gone on to carry those pregnancies to term.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well and congratulations!
