Understanding Elevated AFP Levels and Down Syndrome Screening
QuestionI just received a call from my doctor that said that the downsyndrome part of my afp came back "slightly elevated 1 in 247". I was wondering if this means I am going to have a downs baby.
AnswerDear Laura,
No - this does not mean that it is certain that you will have a baby with Down's Syndrome. These tests are for screening purposes only. The levels of the substances they test for - along with a woman's age and other factors - help the doctor estimate the chance that the baby may have certain problems or birth defects. Many women who have a positive screening will actually end up having healthy babies. The screening test simply indicates the need for more testing.
Your doctor will more than likely now order a Level II ultrasound (a more sophisticated ultrasound than the average one) and/or amniocentesis in order to confirm or rule out the possibility of Down's Syndrome.
There is no need to panic right now. The additional testing will be much more conclusive than this screening result.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
