Delayed Period After Depo Use: Pregnancy Risk & Hormone Recovery

Question
I was on Depo for a year and some months, and I decided to get off. My husband and I started using protection but one broke. I still have no period. So can I get pregnant?

Answer
Dear Felicia,

If you are still not having a period as a result of your Depo use, then the likelihood of conceiving is lower. This tends to indicate that your hormone levels have not returned to normal and you are not ovulating regularly.

Women who want to become pregnant may stop using Depo Provera at any time, but after the last shot of Depo Provera, it can take over 6 months for the drug to leave the body. Side effects may linger until the drug is completely gone. For some women, fertility returns immediately. For others, it may take 6-18 months or longer for the body's hormone cycle to go back to normal.

If you remain concerned about the possibility that you might have conceived, you should wait about 3-4 weeks and test for pregnancy. Since you aren't having regular periods yet, you won't be able to determine whether you have missed, so it will simply be a matter of waiting the appropriate amount of time.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and hope you have a Happy Easter!
