QuestionI got my tubes tied march of 06 after having my third child. I am 26 and kinda
hoping I will be blessed with another child. My question is could I possibly be
pregnant I've been having extreme headaches a feelings of dizziness, nausea
and some vomiting here and there. I've been having very obvious cramping
since my last period which was March 25. I have been having lower back
pains and spotted one day about a week ago. I am also kinda confused
because every since my tubaligation my periods have been regular and very
consistant with length until Feb of this year when my cycle changed days but
in Feb it lasted the same 4 days as usual but in March lasted 6 within a week
of my last period my cramping began and has lasted. The reason I'm asking
could I be pregnant is because these signs are very familiar to the symptoms i
had with all 3 of my children.
AnswerDear Meeka,
Tubal ligations are considered a permanent procedure. Occasionally though, a woman still gets pregnant, despite having had her tubes tied properly. The tubes have evolved in such a way as to try to heal themselves, and sometimes a tract develops that allows egg and sperm to meet. Tubal ligation, regardless of whether the tubes are cut, burned, clipped, banded, or tied, is about 99% effective, meaning that about 1% of women will conceive an unplanned pregnancy after tubal ligation. This failure occurs slightly more frequently in younger women.
If you think that you may have conceived, my advice is to wait until you have missed a period, or have a spotty period, and then test for pregnancy. Make sure you use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.
The symptoms you describe are hormonal in nature, so it is difficult to "diagnose" a pregnancy based on symptoms alone. You will need to wait and test to know for sure.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
