Irregular Periods After Childbirth: What to Do Next?
QuestionAfter I had my daughter on 6/05 I went on the seasonal birth control. I had stopped taking it on 06/06 in hopes to have another child. Well after taking it I had 1 last menstrual cycle in July and haven't had anything since. I have since been to the obgyn and they ran tests and everything has been normal. I am not sure where else to go to next. They had told me that they have done all that they could do. I am wondering if it would be a possibility if I started taking birth control again if maybe it would make my menstrual cycle come back, or should I just continue to wait.. thanks
AnswerDear Crystal,
I will assume that the tests they ran included thyroid function tests as well as hormone levels, as thyroid dysfunction can cause the absence of menses.
My suggestion would be to ask the doctor if he/she will consider ordering a progesterone preparation for you to try to "kick start" your period.
Aside from that, you might want to consider seeing a fertility specialist who might take more time/energy in determining the cause for your sudden absence of menses during the last year and whether you are ovulating at all.
I hope this has helped some. I'm sure you are frustrated. I don't think I would necessarily suggest re-starting BCPs if your ultimate goal is pregnancy, however. I wish you well.
