AnswerDear Ashley,
If you had unprotected sex during the last cycle, then you cannot dismiss the possibility of pregnancy. What your friend is probably referring to is called implantation bleeding. Only about a third of pregnant women experience implantation bleeding but it can happen at the time the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Implantation bleeding typically occurs 6-12 days after conception which is often right before you would expect to have a period. The difference is that it is shorter in duration and lighter in volume than a normal period. It can be pink, red, or brown in color.
You did not note when you took the pregnancy tests, but I usually recommend that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing. Make sure when you test that you are using 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.
If you wait another week and re-test and that test is also negative, I would suggest just waiting to see what the next cycle brings. There are many various causes for amenorrhea (absence of periods) - pregnancy being just one. Others can be:
-Hormonal abnormalities, which cause fluctuating levels of the hormones needed to support menstruation
-Emotional or physical stress / Depression
-Rapid weight loss or gain
-Change in diet
-Low body weight
-Obesity
-Frequent or strenuous exercise
-Cysts or tumors in the ovaries
-Thyroid or Pituitary dysfunction
-Certain medications or drug use
-Menopause OR Premature ovarian failure (menopause before age 40)
-Occasionally stopping birth control pills
The general recommendation is that if you miss three consecutive periods and pregnancy is not the reason, you should see your doctor so that a cause can be determined. More than likely your doctor will do a quantitative blood pregnancy test (serum beta hCG) to make sure that pregnancy is ruled out as an option.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
