Uterine Perforation After IUD Insertion: Symptoms & Concerns

Question
I went on Monday to get the IUD put in for birth control but when the doctor tried doing it she had to stop because she said she accidently poked a hole in my uterus. Which I felt quite a bit of pain. Well after an hour of having my blood pressure watched they released me to go home and no birth control. I just stopped bleeding today from it but the cramping is still there, its not bad just really uncomfortable. I was just wondering if something like this could cause internal bleeding or anything else serious? I'm home raising our kids alone because my husband is in Iraq or else I'd go to the hospital and asked but that's nearly impossible to do with little ones!

Answer
Dear Lindsey,

In 1 out of every 1,000 women, the IUD will get stuck in or puncture (perforate) the uterus. Although perforation is rare, it almost always occurs during insertion. Perforation usually occurs because the IUD is inserted a bit too deeply or at a slightly wrong angle. The IUD should be removed if the uterus has been perforated.  The reason they monitored your BP was to make sure you weren't bleeding internally.

When perforation happens, the wound almost always heals itself. However, you should be aware of any signs of infection - cramping or low back pain that does not go away after another 7-10 days, increased temperature, fatigue, etc,... and report any of those symptoms to your doctor.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
