QuestionI have had a non-hormonal IUD for over 3 years. the severe cramping and heavy periods have caused me tremendous grief, so i would like to switch back to the pill. I can't get the IUD removed for a number of weeks and i am going on vacation in a two weeks, exactly when my next period is due to arrive. Not wanting to spoil the trip with severe cramping, if i start taking the pill now, will the pill prevent my period from coming as scheduled, even though i still have the IUD inside? Thanks!

Its possible that starting the pill will dely your period, but it is supposed to be started for the first time in conjunction with your period. And to be honest with you, I am not sure what affects taking the pill with your IUD still in will have. It may make the cramping worse. I would recommend you wait to start the pill until after you IUD is removed, as there is no gaurantee it will stop your period from coming this month, as that is not as the directions state you should take it. You could try it, and it might be ok, but it may not work. To be certain it is safe to do, consult your Dr.
