Early Pregnancy Symptoms & Potential Tubal Pregnancy: What to Watch For

Question
I took a pg test today and it was positive I am not supposed to start my period for 4 more days. My question is could the dull cramping feeling I have in my right side be an tubal pregnancy or would I not know this early. It feels exactly like when I ovulate during the middle of my cycle. Should I contact my docter or just wait  and see if it stops.

Answer
Dear Amie,

Four days before your period is due is pretty early to get a strong positive on a home pregnancy test. By chance, was your last period lighter than normal or spotty? If it was, you may actually be further along in the pregnancy than you think.

If there is any chance that this is a pregnancy which is further along than just the 3.5 weeks you believe it is now, you definitely should see your doctor as soon as possible. He/she can get an hCG level and that amount will help to confirm pregnancy dating. An initial ultrasound will also be done to more accurately date the pregnancy if the hCG level indicates that the pregnancy may be further along. That ultrasound will also confirm that the pregnancy is within the uterus and not an ectopic pregnancy because of the one-sided pain your are experiencing. Typically the one-sided pain of a tubal would not be felt as early as a 3 week gestation, but I would suggest you see your doctor for the initial visit as soon as possible for all the reasons mentioned anyway.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
