Early Pregnancy Development: hCG Levels & CRL Measurements

Question

"1)approximately,How many weeks or days after conception can you see positive results from grocery pt test?
We conceived on 071307-A week into conceiving I felt pregnant w/ very slight symptoms of dizziness. My first ultrasound on Aug9th (said I was 5.5 weeks -LMP.)
**it looked like a large white ring and dr pointed to a very faint heart beat.
Then on 08/21/07 (7 weeks 4 days lmp) fetus was jumping like crazy and had a crl of 13.4 mm,
2) Do these descriptions fit with their week of development? after my 7wk ultrasound, Dr said, I was closer to 6 weeks on my first ultraound.
3)does the fetus grow this quickly 4 weeks from conception (the large white circle),
4)and then grow to 13.mm that quickly from 5.5-6 to 7 wk 4 days?
5) Is this normal growth because it seems to grow much quicker than I thought possible.
6} Would these measurements and descriptions better match the conseption date 061807 or 071307.
Thank you for any information from your experience that you can share with me.

Answer
Dear Lynn,

Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period (which would be approximately 2 weeks gestational age), I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. Women tend to get a more consistent positive reading approximately 3 weeks after the conception date. However, this is quite dependent upon how quickly the fertilized egg implants and hCG levels begin rising.

The ultrasound results sound spot on. The gestational sac can usually be visualized as early as 4.5 weeks of gestation and the yolk sac at about 5 weeks. The embryo can be observed and measured by about 5.5 weeks. A visible heartbeat can typically be detected by pulsed doppler ultrasound by about 6 weeks. The average CRL measurement for 6 weeks is 4.5mm (the earliest it can usually be measured accurately), for 7 weeks is 9.2mm, for 7 1/2 weeks is 13mm, and for 8 weeks is 15mm. They do grow and develop rapidly in the beginning! That is why early ultrasounds, especially those done before 12-14 weeks, are the MOST reliable for dating a pregnancy. After that time, different babies will grow and develop at different rates, so using measurements for dating is not as accurate.

The ultrasound dating definitely seems to confirm a conception date around 7/13-7/14.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
