Ultrasound and Paternity Confirmation: Pregnancy After Multiple Partners

Question
QUESTION: HI ! I am having a problem with an issue in my life that I need a solid resolution to. I cannot sleep, cannot eat, it is all I think about. I have had intercourse with two seperate men, two weeks apart and I am now pregnant. I had an ultrasound done at six and a half weeks that gave me a due date of February 27, 2011. I have had two more ultrasounds done that have yielded the same date. My question is, can I put my mind at ease knowing that one man is father versus the other? I am going crazy reading all these articles online about how long sperm could live in my system and the margin of error for early ultrasounds... If I had sex with one man on May 23 and the other on June 5... which one can I be confident about knowing is the father? Thank you for your help!!! I am going nuts

ANSWER: Dear Angela,
I would need to know two more pieces of information. Can you tell me the date that you started your last period? And, how many days is it usually from the first day of one period to the first day of the next one?

Have a great day,
Sheva

QUESTION: my LMP is a little complicated... they are not taking that as a factor in my due date, they are simply going by ultrasounds but here is my menstrual period history:  I stopped taking birth control in April. Being on birth control, I had three "active" pill weeks and one "non active" pill week, making my cycle 28 days. My last period was April 25th. I should have resumed taking my birth control on May 2nd, but I did not. I found out I was pregnant on June 18. I went for a dating scan on July 8th that put me at 6 and a half weeks. I had another scan on August 27 that put me at 13 weeks and 5 days and another on October 11th making me 20 weeks and 1 day. From the first scan my due date was determined by ultrasound to be february 27,2011 which a conception date of june 6. ultrasound also calculated that my last menstrual period was May 23rd. I know for sure I did not experience any bleeding and did not have a "period". When I count from April 25th, the start of my last known period, 28 days later is May 23rd. Can this be so? Would birth control not have messed up everything and thrown it out of wack? Counting 14 days after May 23rd is June exactly June 6th, the date that I would be expected to ovulate. I was not ovululating, as I was on birth control, but is it really possible to still be in synch with the pills? Can I still ovulate and not have had that actual period on May 23rd, which is the exacy day I would have gotten it if I was still on birth control? That is dead on.  so thats all the facts for you :) thank you so much!

Answer
Dear Angela,
I have to begin by saying that without a paternity test, I don't think you can be certain which is the true father, since the two possible dates of conception are so close to each other, and because you don't have a true LMP, since it was induced by the Pill.

Once you stop taking the Pill, ovulation can come back already during the next cycle, which you started on May 2nd. Therefore, it is possible that you ovulated in May or June.

I'm assuming the weeks you gave me are based on the usual way doctors measure weeks of pregnancy, which is from the LMP. So that 6 weeks pregnant would mean 4 weeks from conception.
Based on the possible conception dates you gave me, and the dating scans, it looks as if June 5th was the date of conception.
However, finding out you are pregnant only two weeks after conception is unusual unless you had a blood test, since home tests aren't always accurate so soon after conception.

I'm sorry I can't give you a certain answer.
I wish you the best of luck,
Sheva
