Postpartum Yeast Infection: Symptoms, Treatment & When to Seek Urgent Care
QuestionI had a vaginal delivery of my first child one week ago. I had internal tearing and was received stitches. About 3 days ago I called my doctor about itching, and he prescribed an oral medicine (Difflucan). I took the pill but the itching has not stopped and now I have the white discharge. I have an appointment for next week, but I wonder if I need to see someone sooner (perhaps the emergency room) because I am scared that the yeast could cause a problem with the healing of my stitches, and or do some sort of damage to me internally (since my body is trying to heal). If I do have a yeast infection is immediate medical attention needed or can it wait a few days till a doctor can see me?
AnswerDear Linda
It seems that you got this prescription by phone. When you have such a complaint you have to see your doctor. A correct diagnosis is the key to proper prescription and diagnosis cannot be made on phone. There is a wide variety of discharges with different characteristics and treatment options.
Anyway, if you are correctly diagnosed as having candida, the risk to affect your healing is minimal and you may need a second dose of diflucan if the response is not adequate.
Best of Luck.
